David Young: A translator who helped expand Prescrire's international reach

David Young, who died recently, was more than a highly professional translator; he was a faithful colleague and friend of Prescrire's editorial team.

We recently learned that David Young, who translated Prescrire's articles into English, had died at the age of 63.

David worked regularly since 1992 with the team in charge of Prescrire International. He had moved to France in the 1980s, having previously studied microbiology in the UK, and soon made a name for himself for the quality of his translations among researchers at the Institut Pasteur. It was a time when good biomedical translators were scarce.

David understood our objective and made it his own: to produce the best possible translations of Prescrire's analyses for the international community, using plain English while retaining all the nuances of the original articles. He also had the humility to agree to have his work reviewed by other English speakers and the Prescrire International editorial team as part of our translation verification process, a quality much appreciated in a translator.

David was Prescrire International's sole translator for over 20 years, fulfilling this role unwaveringly, without interruption and always on time. Having had a broad experience of translating French scientific studies, he appreciated the rigour of Prescrire's articles and derived particular pleasure from working for an independent medical journal, free of any influence from the pharmaceutical industry or health authorities, and from helping expand the international reach of our movement. David was more than a highly professional translator, he was a faithful colleague and friend of Prescrire's editorial team.
