Prescrire: financial independence and transparent accounts

Prescrire, financed solely through subscriptions, publishes its accounts each year.

The Association Mieux Prescrire, a not-for-profit continuing education organisation (under  the French law of 1901), publishes all the Prescrire publications. Its bylaws define its mission as being to "to work, in all independence, in favour of quality healthcare, first and foremost in the interest of patients".

Prescrire publishes the Association Mieux Prescrire's accounts in the March issue of its French edition and the June issue of Prescrire International, just as it has done every year since 1992. The accounts are also freely available online HERE.

The 2014-2015 financial year was a difficult one, because of the general economic downturn. In France, there were few indications for healthcare professionals with regard to the future of the country's healthcare system, and there was confusion surrounding training and continuous professional development. During the year, the number of paying subscriptions to Prescrire fell slightly; there were 32,412 subscriptions as at the end of August 2014.

In addition to La revue Prescrire, the Association Mieux Prescrire offers healthcare professionals a Monthly Reading Test, Thematic Training Programme, and Nursing Training Programme. And, since autumn 2014, a new pluridisciplinary professional development programme: Médicaments en Questions ("Examing drugs"). There are further projects in the pipeline for the future.

By subscribing to Prescrire, healthcare professionals demonstrate that they are capable of financing an independent source of top-level continuing education, confirming their commitment to quality care in the best interests of the patients who rely on them.
