To deliver quality care, health professionals require regular, probing, relevant updates. They need to sift continually through the range of treatments on offer, without confusing commercial innovation with therapeutic progress, or taking misleading, biased or useless information for solid, proven, operational data. Current regulations governing the granting of marketing authorisations fail to prevent changes that represent backward rather than forward movement. And health authorities are not particularly exacting with regard to drugs' effectiveness.
The purpose of Prescrire's 30-page annual report is to point out the most remarkable treatment breakthroughs of 2005, and to help health professionals make sure that they have not overlooked any of the year's important therapeutic developments.
