Discussion-debate: "Self-medication: how much autonomy for patients? What is the role of healthcare professionals?"

Prix Prescrire 2013On 3 October 2013 the editors of the independent French journal Prescrire will announce the winners of the annual Prescrire Prize, which recognises works that are of interest to the public at large and/or healthcare professionals. The awards ceremony will be followed by a discussion-debate (in French) on the theme of self-medication.

Theme of the discussion-debate:

"Self-medication: how much autonomy for patients?
What is the role of healthcare professionals? "

A substitute for prescription medicines? An aid to individual autonomy? A practice encouraged by non-reimbursement of medicines by the public health system, by the increase in information to the public, or by direct-to-consumer advertising?

No doubt all of the above, not to mention numerous questions about the medicalisation of ordinary situations, about the risks, about patients’ knowledge, about the role of healthcare professionals, etc.
