Who killed the glassmakers of Givors? A social sciences investigation
Marichalar P "Qui a tué les verriers de Givors? Une enquête de sciences sociales" Édition La Découverte, Paris 2017: 251 pages, 22 euros. Available for order from l'Appel du livre.
In France, the under-reporting and under-recognition of workplace-related illnesses, including cancer, has often been noted. The underlying mechanisms are rarely described as a concrete sequence of events. That is what is so interesting about this investigation, carried out by a sociologist and historian who accompanied the former workers from the Givors glass factory and their families during their own investigation to identify the causes of the illnesses they were suffering from, and then during the long and difficult process of having them recognised as work-related illnesses.
