Preventing foot problems in the elderly to maintain autonomy

Simple hygiene and foot care measures can help the elderly to maintain their independence.

Between 60% and 90% of the elderly suffer from foot problems. These are often painful and sometimes interfere with walking, and therefore with the person’s autonomy. They can also lead to falls.

The measures suggested by the French National Authority for Health to help maintain healthy feet in the elderly are simple, present no risk of any major adverse effects, and can be recommended to the elderly or those assisting them, such as family and carers. Wash the feet every day, dry them thoroughly and apply a moisturiser; file the toenails; do not use corn removers; inspect the feet regularly and check for lesions; choose appropriate footwear; avoid walking barefoot; consult a doctor in the event of wounds, suspected infection or pain; etc.
