Prescrire: financial independence and transparency

Prescrire, financed solely through subscriptions, publishes its accounts each year.

Prescrire has published the yearly accounts of the Association Mieux Prescrire in the March issue of its French edition and the June issue of Prescrire International, just as it has done each year since 1992 (the accounts are also freely available online HERE).

The Association Mieux Prescrire, a non-profit continuing education organisation under the French law of 1901, produces all the Prescrire publications. The Association's bylaws define its primary aim as “To work, in all independence, in favour of quality healthcare, first and foremost in the interest of patients (...).”.

2012–2013 was a challenging year for Prescrire: general difficulties linked to France's economic situation; specific problems resulting from the chaotic introduction of compulsory continuing professional development (CPD) for healthcare professionals; the low morale of many healthcare professionals, often overworked and stressed by the challenges they face daily. However, during this financial year, the number of paid subscriptions to Prescrire remained steady compared with 2012, with 33 532 subscribers at the end of August 2013.

In addition to Prescrire, the Association Mieux Prescrire offers continuing education programmes for healthcare professionals:  the Monthly Reader's Test, Prescrire's Thematic Training Programme and the Prescrire Nurse's Training Programme. And, since 2013, a new professional development programme entitled “Question de Pratiques” (“Practice Matters”).

By subscribing to Prescrire, healthcare professionals demonstrate that they can finance an independent source of top-quality continuing education, affirming their commitment to better care, in the interests of the patients who rely on them.

Prescrire's goal remains unchanged: to offer healthcare professionals selective, critical information and educational tools to help improve the quality of care.
