Female condoms: a welcome alternative

Female condoms enable women to be in control of their own sexual protection. Their effectiveness as contraceptives and in preventing infection, especially against HIV, is comparable to that of the male condom.

The female condom is an alternative in the case of contra-indications to or adverse effects associated with other contraceptives, or when immediate protection is required. Above all it is an alternative to male condoms in the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, including AIDS. The female condom comprises a polyurethane pouch with two flexible rings that hold it in place, one fitting over the cervix and the other outside the vagina. Used once only, its effectiveness as a contraceptive is comparable to that of the male condom; its failure rate varies depending upon correct and regular use. Correctly used, it reduces the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections. The female condom can be inserted well before sexual intercourse and need not be removed immediately after ejaculation. The female condom is little known and not easily accessible in France, mainly because of its high price, even though it has advantages: less risk of accident, no pressure on the penis, greater resistance, no allergies. Healthcare professionals should promote the female condom, especially to those who are most exposed to sexual risks.
